Air Conditioner Start Up

Friday, May 1st, 2009

Now that the outside temperature has topped 60 degrees it is time to get the air conditioner ready for summer. I recommend a couple routine maintenance items before you flip the switch. #1 use a garden hose to give the outside unit a quick once over. Don’t use high pressure as this will damage the fins on the coil and cause all kinds of problems. All you want to do is wash off all the dirt, leaves and other debris so air can pass freely through the coil. #2 Check the condensate drain line from the indoor coil ,”A coil” above the furnace, to your floor drain to ensure it is free of debris and will allow water to drain smoothly. #3 Check your furnace filter and replace as needed. #4 Be sure the humidifier is turned off and the bypass damper is set to the summer or closed position.

You are now ready to set the thermostat to cool, turn on the circuit breaker and make sure the outside disconnect is in the on position. Of course, be sure the temperature setting on your thermostat is lower than the inside temperature of your home , so the air conditioner will start.

If this is confusing in the least, please feel free to call me with your questions, Mike Carney, Burnsville Heating & Air Conditioning  952 894 0005. Remember , no question is a dumb question, so please don’t let anything go unasked.
