The Importance of Air Filters

Replacing your air filter regularly is one of the most important tasks when it comes to maintaining your home’s heating and cooling system. These filters are customized to work with HVAC equipment and help to remove dander, dust, and other pollutants from your home.

Rating Your Filter

The quality of air filter that you have installed in your HVAC system is also important. There are many types of air filters available and they are all ranked on a scale called Minimum Efficiency Rating Value, better known as MERV. If your air filter has a high MERV rating, it is a high-quality filter. The amount of unwanted particles and pollutants that the filter removes depends on the MERV rating of your filter.

Different types of air filters include:

  • Fiberglass Air Filters: These are not designed to protect air because they were originally developed to protect your HVAC equipment. They rate between a 1 and 4 on the MERV scale.
  • Pleated Air Filters: These filters are very affordable and remove almost half of the air pollutants in your home. They range between 10 and 13 on the MERV scale.
  • High-Efficiency Filters: These filters are commonly found in residential HVAC systems. The MERV rating for these filters ranges from 14 to 16.
  • High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) Filters: These are among the highest quality air filters for your home and are rated between 17 and 20 on the MERV scale.
